With six shops across the UK and three more due to open this summer, The Eggfree Cake Box, which produces high quality, eggless vegetarian cream cakes, is now approaching its third anniversary.

Rick Bhambra, who owns and manages The Eggfree Cake Box’s Slough branch, hasn’t looked back since he left a career in furniture sales to open his shop last August. He explains: “I get to be my own boss while having the safety net of working with a winning brand, together with top class training and mentoring from business experts who have an investment in ensuring each shop is a success.” 

Running a local cake shop is a popular choice for potential franchisees for a range of reasons, from social to financial. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t enjoy cake and see it as an important part of celebrating, whether that be a wedding, an engagement party, a new job, or a nice slice of cake simply because it’s the end of the week,” says Bhambra.

In its first three months of trading the Slough branch served more than 2,000 customers. There is a surprisingly high demand for egg-free cake throughout the UK , particularly among Hindu and Muslim communities, but also from vegetarians, vegans and those on other restricted diets. 

Last month Bhambra became the first Eggfree Cake Box franchisee to take on a second shop, securing premises in Reading town centre with a view to begin trading in August. “In terms of job satisfaction, it’s great to feel that you’re adding something special to your customers’ celebrations,” he says. “From a financial point of view, we’ve had no problems reaching our monthly sales targets and have been very pleased with the progress of the business to date.”
