Neal’s Yard Remedies offers new consultants a low-cost start-up featuring a range of helpful tools to help build a successful business

Neal’s Yard Remedies was launched in 1981, long before green was fashionable. The fledgling organic business opened its first shop in Neal’s Yard - a then hidden courtyard in the heart of London’s Covent Garden. Its vision was to bring the expertise of the apothecary and a holistic approach to health and beauty to local people and their communities.

Thirty years later and you can still visit the same shop that set the stage for NYR Organic, a renowned leader in organic beauty and well-being across the globe.

HERITAGE

Apothecaries had a deep knowledge of herb-based remedies, establishing their own Worshipful Society back in 1617. One of the distinctive features of their trade was the blue bottles filled with herbs and potions that lined their shelves. Neal’s Yard Remedies felt that much of this time-tested knowledge was being lost and the world could do with a strong dose of what they used to offer.

Peter Kindersley, chairman and proprietor, says: “The ethos of the company is still the same as when it started. We pride ourselves on having kept true to our founding principles of ethical, environmentally responsible, sustainable, natural and organic health and beauty. Our strong eco-principles have set us apart from the very beginning.”

The Neal’s Yard Remedies philosophy is a simple one - transforming people’s lives by educating and empowering them on how to live more healthily through the power of nature. The direct selling arm of the business, NYR Organic, has a mission to improve the quality of people’s lives by sharing business expertise and encouraging a more natural, holistic approach to health, beauty and well-being. Peter Kindersley continues: “We believe in sustainability, taking only what nature can afford to give and no more than we need. We avoid overpackaging, polluting and using toxic or harmful substances and always use wild, organic and natural ingredients. By listening to our customers and staff, and sharing our knowledge, we can inspire and empower people on how to live more healthily and enjoy greater well-being.”

With this ethos at the heart of the company, the passion for improving the quality of people’s lives is vital to the consultant’s business.

Working with Neal’s Yard Remedies is a way of life and the business gives its consultants training and support so they can nurture a successful business. With NYR Organic there are no set targets - it really is up to the individual to develop their business at their own pace.

Currently the company has 3,000 consultants, with NYR Organic attracting a diverse range of people - from successful business owners to the more traditional young mum with children wanting the flexibility of running a business from home. About 30 per cent of the consultant base comprises qualified complementary therapists or personal trainers who have integrated NYR Organic into their own business.

Neal’s Yard Remedies offers new consultants a low-cost start-up, a free personalised website and promotional materials, among other helpful tools, to start their business. While the party experience is the best way to generate sales and income, customers are able to place orders with the consultant at a party via the NYR Organic catalogue, or direct through the consultant’s own website.

Consultants can build their team and develop their NYR Organic business through five levels, culminating in senior ambassador. The company’s very first consultants are referred to as frontline founding leaders and understandably enjoy a certain respect among their peers. All have embraced the eco-principles first established by Neal’s Yard founder Romy Fraser, as well as the earnings potential of this remarkable brand.

Consultants have the flexibility to work around family commitments, ensuring they strike the right work/family balance. Group leader Elaine Wan says: “This business is the best. It gives me the flexible working to fit around my family, while building a business that grows and grows.
