Mary Kay offers an opportunity for both women and men to start their own business with one of the world’s most respected cosmetic companies
When Mary Kay founded her cosmetic company in 1963 after ‘retiring’ from a career in direct selling, little did she know that it was the start of something that today has a global turnover of $2.5 billion from over 35 different markets and an independent sales force of over two million dedicated personnel.
This USA-based company sells skincare and colour cosmetics to millions of women worldwide and offers an opportunity for both women and men to start their own business with one of the world’s most respected cosmetic companies quickly and easily.
“Mary Kay is a business opportunity that appeals to people from all walks of life,” says Helen van Wengen, general manager of Mary Kay UK. “We have had mothers with young children who want an income that fits around their family, students paying their way through university and highly paid professionals who want to increase their income become their own boss and have a better lifestyle with us than they did with their employers.
“What we look for are people who understand the integrity of Mary Kay and are willing to work hard as genuine ambassadors for our brand. For these people, their earnings are limitless.”
The company is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013 and there are very strong opportunities in the UK. With a UK market worth £8 billion at retail, growth in the cosmetic sector is predicted to be 2.2 per cent in 2012 - a strong performer given the current economic climate.
“Traditionally, in difficult economic times cosmetics have always performed well,” says Natasha Hanley, marketing manager for Mary Kay UK. “Mary Kay wins over many other companies as all new independent beauty consultants are assigned to a unit with their own independent sales director. This unit is a support mechanism meeting every week to discuss business, challenges, new products and customer service to help every individual actively grow their business.”
One of the great advantages of Mary Kay is that it’s quick, simple and very low cost to start your business. The Mary Kay starter kit is available from £85 and every new independent consultant receives company training at the Mary Kay London head office. This includes a one-day new consultant orientation, plus training by head office staff and advice from established independent sales directors. The training also covers business basics, products, company philosophy and the rewards available. Every year there are three key national training events, one specifically for independent sales directors and the other two - the Career Conference and End Of Year Seminar - which are open to everyone. Packed with information on how to grow your Mary Kay business, these events are motivational, informative and lots of fun.
The added advantage of Mary Kay is that there are several ways in which new independent beauty consultants can earn commission, including Mary Kay parties, product sales, reorders, through building their team and the Mary Kay website. Each independent beauty consultant is also offered a personalised web page on the Mary Kay website where existing or new clients can shop. This allows them to earn commission without having to maintain a website.
Successful UK directors can potentially earn five-figure incomes per month, while any independent beauty consultant who wishes to work towards becoming a team leader or director can receive specific training to help them achieve this goal.
Mary Kay also has a fundamental principle to recognise excellence in business, and as such prizes at the End Of Year Seminar are a major part of an independent beauty consultant’s year. Top prizes include cars, director trips to exotic locations such as Jordan, the Caribbean and Australia, and jewellery such as diamond rings, necklaces and earrings. Helen van Wengen concludes: “Mary Kay offers a wonderful, and very genuine, career for anyone who wants to work in cosmetics in a supportive, empowering environment. With Mary Kay, it really is all yours for the taking.”
Vanessa Stottor’s journey began with Mary Kay in 1997 at the age of 23. She explains: “I wasn’t looking for a silver bullet, however I knew I wanted to work with women, helping them to look and feel better about themselves, and I wanted a family, with my then boyfriend Brian, while still being able to work.
“I always felt that I was destined for great things and felt frustrated that my previous jobs didn’t fulfil my desires to help others to the best of my ability. One day a woman approached me at work and suggested I learn more about Mary Kay. I had never heard of the company before, but she created a clear vision for me - a career where I could help women look and feel fabulous as well as choose where, when and whom I worked with.”
Today Vanessa is an independent senior sales director with an ever growing team of over 70 women, who she mentors UK wide.
“I meet with them on a regular basis for our Success Meetings and I help them achieve their own ambitious goals,” she says. “Working with Mary Kay has taught me so much and I am very grateful I found this wonderful company at an early age. After starting my family in 2000, life handed me a few obstacles, but thankfully my family, Mary Kay and its unique philosophy helped me through a few tough years.
“Three years ago my children started secondary school and so I have been able to concentrate much more on my business. My personal development during my time with the company means I am a completely different person to that 23 year old. I am now a female entrepreneur, something that I used to think wasn’t possible with limited qualifications. My communication skills are very strong and the satisfaction from my work is off the scale. “The cars, the foreign holidays and the diamonds I have won are the icing on the cake. I am an ordinary girl and, thanks to Mary Kay, I never worry about where money is coming from - I just apply myself a little more.
“However, the greatest gift to me is that I have managed to be with my children for all the important events of their life. I have worked hard for my family, but not at the expense of my family, and that makes Mary Kay one of the best business opportunities in the market today and one where I can wear my ‘Mum, Mrs and Vanessa hat’.”
